Physical education curriculum in primary education: A systematic review of the literature (2010-2025)

Introduction: The physical education curriculum in elementary school guides holistic development and meets students’ educational needs. Despite advances in inclusive and competency-based models, there remains a gap between the prescribed curriculum and
educational practices. Objective: To analyze curricular approaches, structural components, implementation strategies, assessment practices, and challenges. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted covering the period from 2010 to July 2025, using
the ERIC, SciELO, Google Scholar, Scopus, Dialnet, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Taylor & Francis, and Web of Science databases. A total of 557 articles were identified in the systematic review. After removing duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria using the Rayyan tool, 66 studies were selected for analysis. Results: The most common curriculum models focus on competencies, physical literacy, health, and inclusion,
with strategies that promote teacher flexibility; assessment is oriented toward formative processes. On the other hand, there are limitations in terms of material and institutional resources and specialized teacher training. Conclusions: For these reasons, flexible and contextualized curricula are required, as well as professional development for teachers in elementary physical education.
